THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST
From Alvar Nuñez de Cabeza de Vaca to Tony Hillerman; from the Kern Brothers to Georgia O’Keeffe, the region between the Rio Grande and the Arkansas River, and regions stretching west to the Pacific Ocean has inspired authors and artists since the 16th century. For millennia prior to contact with Europeans, indigenous storytellers, builders, potters, and weavers developed a rich visual culture. The first maps and topographical images produced by military engineers and expeditionary artists inspired professional artists to “rough it” on railroad and mineral surveys of the west. The high elevation and clear light were a magnet for artists yearning for escape from the din and grime of the industrial metropolis. In many ways, the southwestern United States serves as a canonical representation of the wild beauty, cultural diversity, and rugged individualism of the American spirit.
This particular suite of prints is drawn from Sketchbook Traveler: Southwest. Focused on Monument Valley in the Navajo Nation, which straddles multiple states; and Joshua Tree National Park, located just north of the Coachella Valley, were the Mojave Desert meets the northern reaches of the Sonoran Desert, this selection is a pendant to the Rio Grande portfolio also featured on this website.
