Mountain Elegy (left) and Desert Nocturne (right) Copperplate color intaglio prints on Somerset paper. 2024

James Lancel McElhinney just produced two new aquatints with Philadelphia master printer Cindi Royce Ettinger. Artist’s proofs will be debuted on June 14, 2024, in the exhibition American Nocturnes; new works by McElhinney at Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

These hand-pulled, signed, numbered and date color intaglio etchings are printed on 11 x 14-inch (27.94 x 35.56 cm.) acid-free Somerset paper produced by St. Cuthbert’s Mill, in the Cathedral City of Wells, England, and blind-stamped by C.R. Etinger Studio.

Copper plates were used in pairs to create each of these intaglio prints, which celebrate the mysterious beauty of the southwestern landscape. Like Frederic Church’s Heart of the Andes, these images are composites that blend observation, memory, and imagination. Individual artist’s proofs go on sale June 14, priced at $800.00USD. Needlewatcher Editions plans to release limited editions of 30, later this year.

MIDWINTER CABIN FEVER CONFAB. January 29, 2022. 12 Noon. Eastern Standard Time (New York, Montreal & Lima, Peru)

Recalling with pleasure last year’s workshops sponsored by Albany Institute of History and Art, Greenwich Art Society, Hudson River Museum, Whallonsburg Grange, and other venues, these learning experiences helped get us through trying times. While I hoped to run workshops in Ireland, New Mexico, and here in the Northeast, it’s hard to plan without knowing what course the current pandemic may take. Having a community of mindful travelers, pursuing a deeper understanding of art, history and the environment, let’s throw another log on the fire, jump online, and explore what’s in store for 2022.           =

Reflecting the profound influence the medieval Japanese weapons industry exerted across Asia, metalworkers from Sri Lanka and Tibet, and from Monsoon Asia to China produced decorative hand guards in Japanese form, embellished according to local taste. These played a significant role in maritime trade during the early and mid-modern eras, being used as greeting-gifts in commerce and diplomacy. Modest in size and affordable in price, these historic objects exhibit delightful artistry, relics of an age of swashbuckling mariners.
