Between 2019 and 2023, James Lancel McElhinney collaborated with master-printer Michael Costello of Hand Graphics in Santa Fe, NM, to produce a series of unique images of the Southwestern landscape, based on McElhinney’s expeditionary-inspired traveler sketchbook-paintings of the region. McElhinney drew images by hand onto Kitakata washi, which were incorporated into the prints using chine-collé; a process in which a paper tissue—typically East Asian rice-paper—is sandwiched between the base sheet and the printed image. Laying down multiple color “drops” using roller-blends interact with the linear elements to create striking and haunting effects. Secondary “ghost” prints, elaborated as studio improvisations, veer into abstraction.
All of these artworks were created with oil-based etching inks, with chine-collé, on Hahnemühle etching-paper, with some printed on Rives BFK. Both are archival, acid-free, Ph-neutral papers. Sheet size: 22 x 30 inches (55.88 x 76.2 centimeters); image size: 14.375 x 18.75 inches (36.51 x 47.625 centimeters). Each print is numbered 1/1 (unique image), titled, signed and dated by the artist. Each sheet bears the blind stamp of Hand Graphics, Santa Fe. Each print is accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by the artist.
