As part of the research and development of this project we looked at a number of different binding options, of which this was the first prototype, produced by Against the Grain Bookbinding Arts in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Due to the COVID crisis it became necessary to locate a book-binder in closer geographic proximity to the publisher. This left us with only two (2) copies of the artist’s proofs, in the binding by Against the Grain Bindery in New Mexico. One of these has been sold to a longtime collector of McElhinney’s work. This leaves one copy available for purchase. Contents include a title-page, image-index with colophon, accompanied byten signed dated archival pigment prints of McElhinney’s journal-paintings of the Rio Grande Valley.

Backstory: Inspired by late-18th and early 19th-century artists, McElhinney’s journal-paintings have been reinterpreted as suites of prints, which can be enjoyed in the form of an unbound book, or framed for display on the wall. O.T.W. The Schuylkill River, the limited edition, follows the success of McElhinney’s 2017 Hudson Highlands: North River Suite Volume One. THE AUTHOR
James Lancel McElhinney is a visual artist, author, historian, appraiser and publisher. He attended Tyler School of Art (BFA), Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and Yale MFA). He is a recipient of a 2017 Pollock-Krasner Grant., and an artist fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. McElhinney is listed on the Master Artist Council of the Arthur Miller Foundation. A feature article on McElhinney’s journal-works by Peter Trippi, Editor-in-Chief of Fine Arts Connoisseur was published in the March-April 2018 edition of the magazine. McElhinney’s journal paintings and print editions were featured in the exhibition Wish You were Here: Journals, Journeys and Expeditions, at The Institute Library in New Haven, Connecticut from June 7 through August 31, 2018. On view from October 24, 2018 to January 5, 2020, O.T.W. On the Water: The Schuylkill River was the inaugural installation in a community gallery created to accompany the new River Alive experience at Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia. James McElhinney: Discover the Hudson Anew paired McElhinney’s fine sketchbooks and fine-press limited editions with historic artists Jon Wethered Bell, Samuel Colman, Jacques-Gerard Milbert, and William Guy Wall. Monotypes and painting-journals from McElhinney’s Grand River Sketchbook project were exhibited in Reimagining New Mexico at Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe, from June 28 to august 3, 2019. His sketchbooks and fine-press limited editions were also featured in Speaking to the Imagination: The Contemporary Artist’s Book at Peters Projects in Santa Fe from June 21-October 26, 2019. McElhinney is the author of Sketchbook Traveler. A Field-Guide to Mindful Travel Through Drawing & Writing, from Schiffer Publishing, scheduled for release in September 2020. The first volume covers the Hudson Valley. The second volume will focus on New Mexico and the American Southwest. McElhinney lives in Manhattan and the Champlain Valley with his wife, art-historian Dr. Katherine Manthorne, and a feline named Maeve.
